League of American Communication Professionals
www.lacp.com
"The League of American Communications Professionals (LACP) is an organization that encourages excellence in the practice of communications for all organizations. It is LACP's goal to help facilitate discussion of best-in-class practices in communications and recognize those who demonstrate exemplary communications behaviors.
LACP hosts both a free monthly newsletter, SPIN, distributed on e-mail as well as quarterly competitions that target various disciplines within the communications field. Further LACP offers membership to PR pros interested in better developing their communications skills and interested in tapping into a center of online PR resources. Finally, LACP provides guidance to communications professionals looking to improve their publicity materials by offering written evaluations as well as to those currently attending college/university through student programs."
AHA Quest for Quality Prize
www.brighamandwomens.org/public affairs/news Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston was one of four cited by the American Hospital Association (AHA) for leadership in "creating a culture of safety." The first annual Quest for Quality Prize, created in partnership with the McKesson Foundation, recognizes hospitals that strive for the highest standards of safety and communication. Brigham and Women's Hospital received attention for its advanced technology such as computerized physician order entry systems. Other winners were Missouri Baptist Medical Center in St. Louis, Fairview Hospital in Great Barrington, Mass., and Children's Hospitals and Clinics in Minneapolis.
Association of Health Care Journalists
This web site from the Association of Health Care Journalists contains lots of interesting snippets from other sources, including details on a conference called "The Adaptable Human Body: Transhumanism and Bioethics in the 21st Century" to be held June 27-29 at Yale University. The AHCJ has its own conference scheduled for spring 2004 in Minneapolis It's said to offer "rich program possibilities for those who cover any aspect of health and health care."
The AHCJ site describes a guide to medical privacy produced by The Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, which outlines how new HIPAA regulations have stymied reporters digging for information.

The definition of a crisis situation at Louisiana State University is as follows: "A crisis situation shall be defined as any situation or event identified by the Chancellor or the Office of Public Safety as having a major impact on the campus community as a whole. The site goes on to outline the proper response of the university through the news media:
Marketing Trends In Healthcare
http://www.solucient.com/forms/nationaltrends.shtml
Do marketers know what young women want from health care? Weight is their first concern. New research from Solucient's HealthViewPlus survey of 20,000 health care consumers reveals that depression and migraines rank right behind weight problems on a list of health issues critical to women ages 18 to 34. Although these women were exposed to TV and radio advertising, they were more likely to respond to direct mail or advertisements found in the physician office. Those suffering from depression were 40 percent more likely to respond to direct mail than TV advertising. The study was conducted in the summer of 2002 using a consumer panel from National Family Opinion (NFO).
